Here’s how to spend a wonderful 15 hours in Stony Brook, N.Y.

|

More than just a college town

Many Long Islanders hear the words Stony Brook and think of the university or hospital, maybe Staller Center for the Arts, which is on the SBU campus.

That’s all valid, given the prestige of those in institutions.

But there’s much more to this North Shore hamlet, like shopping, fine dining, kayaking and some of Long Island’s coolest museums and art exhibits. Here are some suggestions to spend 15 hours in Stony Brook this fall — off campus.

9 a.m.

Sweet Mama’s

The only question is: sweet or savory?

Start your day at Sweet Mama’s for brunch and you won’t be disappointed.

From avocado toast or eggs Benedict to omelettes, the menu is packed with filling comfort foods. If you’re feeling ambitious, try a mimosa flight or indulge in a chocolate peanut butter latte. There’s a full day ahead, so you’ll work it off.

10 a.m.

Madison’s Niche and D.K. Brothers

Look like a million bucks…

After breakfast, it’s time for an upscale shopping experience. Can’t afford it? Just window shop or browse the clearance racks at Madison’s Niche. With six locations across New York, Madison’s Niche showcases eclectic collections of clothing, beauty products, home goods, and even toys for your furry friends. You’ll love the vibe.

If you’re shopping for a special guy, check out D.K. Brothers by Madison’s Niche, also in Stony Brook Village.

11 a.m.

More Shopping

Not just another mall…

If you’re still looking for women’s clothes and home goods, step into Chico’s at 139 Main Street, Mint at 119 Main Street, or Loft at 81 Main Street.

Ben’s Garden Shop combines an art gallery with a retail concept offering greeting cards, books, home décor and a breathtaking garden.

Ben Busko is basically a Long Island legend and if you’re in the area, you need to stop in.

Take a few hours to wander Main Street, because all of Stony Brook Village is adorable. You’ll feel as if you’ve been transported into another world, where Long Island traffic is miles away and the only thing that matters is your credit card limit.

12 p.m.

Little Cheese

Nothing cheesy about this lunch stop

Feeling hungry? You have plenty of choices for lunch in Stony Brook, including Exotic Bowls across from Stony Brook University, Robinson’s Tea Room or Schnitzel’s in Stony Brook Village.

It’s hard to pick just one. But if you love cheese, the choice is clear: Little Cheese offers sandwiches, soups, charcuterie and a wide selection of cheese to eat there or to go.

1 p.m.

L.I. Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame

Billy Joel is movin’ out, and Ray Romano is movin’ in.

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in Stony Brook is getting ready for its next headliner — and this time, it’s TV royalty.

Starting Nov. 28, the “Everybody Loves Raymond: Celebrating 30 Years,” exhibit will debut and honor the smash-hit, Long Island-based CBS sitcom that ran from 1996 through 2005.

The display will feature the 70-foot-wide set from the show’s upcoming 30th anniversary TV special — the first time it’s ever been on public display. Click here to learn more, and to keep reading.

The Hall of Fame also includes a theater, performance stage and gift shop.

Revel in Gatsby’s Gold Coast

The Long Island Museum, which includes a carriage house of horse-drawn vehicles and rotating art exhibits, showcases the rich culture and history of the North Shore.

Kayaking

Sunset on the Harbor

Shopping. Music. Culture. Now it’s time to convene with nature on Stony Brook Harbor. Rent a kayak or paddleboard now through the end of October to experience a breathtaking sunset over the harbor.

Head back to Stony Brook Village, where you’ll find plenty of choices for dinner.

If you’re in the mood for an upscale experience, Luca comes highly recommended by Long Island moms. Choose a three-course dinner of an appetizer or salad, a second course of fresh, homemade pasta and an entrée.

9 p.m.

Grandpa’s Shed for Drinks

Full circle…

Stony Brook Village rolls up its sidewalks early, but there are still a few places open in the area for amazing cocktails.

One of the most highly rated is Grandpa’s Shed, a laidback, speakeasy-style bar attached to Sweet Mama’s.

Relax and enjoy the cozy vibe and seasonal specialty drinks right up until closing.
