Suffolk County Police have arrested a Holtsville man in connection with the hit-and-run crash that killed a 54-year-old Manorville man late last month.
Detectives said Campbell Smith, 58, struck Michael Barnhardt as he crossed County Road 111 on foot, just north of Chapman Boulevard near the Better Burger food truck, about 8:33 p.m. on Aug. 31.
Smith then allegedly fled the scene in a Dodge Ram pickup truck, police said.
Barnhardt was taken to a local hospital after the crash, where he was pronounced dead. Days after the crash, investigators announced they had narrowed the search to a 2009 to 2018 Dodge Ram, possibly maroon or red in color, and asked for the public’s help in identifying the driver.
On Thursday, police said Smith was charged with leaving the scene of an incident with a fatality. He was held overnight at Suffolk Police’s Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
