Inside Massapequa High’s newly renovated main gymnasium

Dwight D. Eisenhower was president the last time Massapequa High School had a brand-new gym floor.

That changed this summer.

The high school has unveiled a top-to-bottom renovation of its main gymnasium, including the replacement of the original floor that dated back to the school’s construction in the mid-1950s.

The newly renovated gym debuted Tuesday evening during an afternoon ribbon-cutting ceremony ahead of a girls varsity volleyball game. The project included new flooring, bleachers, ceiling and lighting, along with fresh paint and other upgrades throughout the space.

“It was a gym floor that had so much incredible history, championships and experiences,” said the district’s superintendent, Dr. William Brennan.

Brennan said the renovation was part of a long-term capital plan developed at the request of the Massapequa Board of Education to upgrade facilities throughout the district.

Work began at the end of May, when the gym was gutted before being rebuilt over the summer.

High school physical education and athletics chairperson Brian Rath and his colleagues helped design the new floor to accommodate the various athletic programs that use the gym. New blue, gold and white bleachers are also slightly larger, increasing spectator capacity.

The makeover extends into the lobby, where large new decals cover walls and doors with Massapequa athletics branding.

Before the ribbon cutting, members of the girls volleyball team recognized elementary, middle and high school teachers who have made an impact on their lives.

Brennan then cut the ribbon alongside school board members, administrators, physical education and athletics staff and student-athletes.
