Island 16: Cinema de Lux closed by Brookhaven for building safety concerns

Island 16 remains closed on Thursday in Holtsville.

Island 16: Cinema de Lux in Holtsville remained shuttered Thursday after the Town of Brookhaven closed the theater a day earlier over safety concerns inside the building.

A notice posted on the front door Wednesday morning states that the structure “has been deemed unsafe for occupancy” by the Town of Brookhaven Department of Public Safety – Division of Fire Prevention.

The Fire Marshal’s order cites “unsafe structure.”

Brookhaven Town spokesperson Drew Scott told Greater Long Island that the town’s Chief Fire Marshal Chris Mehrman said the theater must remain closed until the facility repairs its fire detection system.

“Fire detection systems in large public places are extremely important for public safety,” said Scott, adding that on Wednesday, some of the theater’s exit doors were blocked by snow.

An Island 16 employee manning the phone at the theater complex Thursday morning confirmed the building remained closed.

He said that there are hopes the theater will reopen Friday and described the chances of reopening Thursday night as “a long shot.” Typically, movies begin showing about 11:30 a.m. daily.
