Instead of rummaging to find quarters for expiring Bay Shore parking meters, there’s now a more convenient way to pay. The Town of Islip has teamed up with ParkMobile to allow patrons to pay for metered parking through their mobile devices.
“Right now our parking meters are credit cards and coins; this gives us another dimension by using this cell phone app,” said Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane during a press conference at Napper Tandy’s on Thursday.
The app, which works for all metered locations in Bay Shore, features an alarm to notify people when their time is running low. They can then add more time from their seat, as opposed to leaving the restaurant, theater or retailer to feed the meter.
And people having to leave their seat has been an ongoing problem in the downtown area, says Napper Tandy’s bartender Kelly Gorman.
“Some people don’t come back after they leave [to pay the meter],” she said.
So far, the app has been downloaded hundreds of times since its launch in the fall, according to Islip Town officials. “This is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of the technology that we have,” added Islip councilman Jim O’ Connor
There are fees, however, associated with using the application.
According to the website, it’s 45 cents per transaction.
