JFK airport ranked as fifth worst in the U.S., report

In a development that will make Long Island travelers even more thankful that Islip’s MacArthur Airport has been adding more carriers and more flights, JFK International Airport is ranked in recent report as the fifth worst airport in the nation.

JFK’s comparatively high rate of flights delayed by at least 15 minutes, along with its high percentage of canceled flight and long average wait times on the TSA lines shot it up near the top of Bookies.com’s infamous list.

More than one out of five JFK flights is delayed by at least 15 minutes and nearly 3 percent of the scheduled flights end up being canceled, according to the study released this week.

At least New Jersey’s biggest airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, faired worse than JFK. Newark was deemed America’s worst airport, mainly due to its high average TSA wait time and flight cancellation rate. Only Newark had a flight cancellation percentage above 3 percent, according to the study.

Bookies.com methodology was fairly simple. The study collected data on flight delay percentages, flight cancellation percentages and average TSA wait times. Data for flight delays and cancellations was collected from all flights during 2023.

New York City’s other major airport, LaGuardia Airport, isn’t ranked in the study, since the study only examined the busiest airport in each state (based on passenger volume).

The airports were ranked 50 to 1, with 50 being worst and 1 being best, in each of the three categories. Those three totals were then tallied up, and each airport was listed from worst to best (highest to lowest total).

Mississippi’s Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport came out ranked as the best airport in the Bookies.com study.
