A juvenile humpback whale was discovered washed ashore early Monday morning at Roosevelt Beach, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

“The City is in contact with our federal and state partners,” the department stated. “A necropsy will be performed later this morning followed by burial. Please avoid the area to allow the various agencies to conduct their work.”

The whale, estimated to be about 20 feet long, was spotted amidst high offshore winds. Bystander Lee Winters, who took photos of the scene, described the efforts underway.

“I spoke with Officer Jacobs of LBPD, who told me they were waiting for Marine Conservation to arrive to determine the next step in dealing with the carcass,” Winters said. “In past circumstances, carcasses have been cut up, moved, or buried on the beach. If there is a delay, the carcass will be covered with sand until disposition.”

‘Sad to see’

A necropsy is expected to reveal more about the whale’s death, part of a troubling pattern of marine mammal strandings along the coast. Burial of the remains is planned after the examination is completed.

“It’s sad to see yet another whale dead on our shore,” Winters added.
