Police rescue two kayakers stranded in Long Island Sound

|

Emergency crews rescued two kayakers from the Long Island Sound late Monday afternoon after their kayak sank off Sunken Meadow Beach, police said.

Roger Daniel Ramos Galo and Manfredo Garcia fell in the water around 5:10 p.m. after their kayak capsized. Galo, who was wearing a life jacket, used a cell phone in a waterproof case to call 911.

Harbor Master officers Dylan Harris and Bill Rohr used GPS data and witness accounts to locate Galo about a mile northeast of Sunken Meadow and pulled him aboard around 5:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Marine Bureau officers Joseph Lanzisera and Claudio Barrios, aboard Marine Bravo, found Garcia about a half to three-quarters of a mile offshore. He was not wearing a life vest.

Both men were brought to Kings Park Bluff, evaluated by first responders, and declined further medical treatment.
