Kristen Moran-Daleo, a Miller Place mother of three and a longtime administrator at a Yaphank school for children with special needs, died on Wednesday, Aug. 12. She was 51.

Moran-Daleo, who was born in Manhasset on Nov. 22, 1974, served as associate executive director of the New Interdisciplinary School (NIS), a nonprofit early childhood learning center located on Sills Road.

Founded in 1976, NIS serves more than 400 children from infancy to age 5, with and without disabilities, offering integrated and self-contained special education classes, an Autism Interdisciplinary Model program, Universal Pre-Kindergarten, and on-site occupational, physical, speech and psychological therapy services.

Moran-Deleo’s husband, Brian, announced her passing in a social media post Wednesday, writing that his “heart is completely broken” and describing watching her love their three children, Isabella, Nicholas and Alexa, as “the greatest joy of my life.”

He thanked the community for “an outpouring of love, prayers, and support” in the family’s darkest hours. Colleagues at NIS also shared their grief.

“Our entire school community mourns the loss of Kristen,” Susan Cali, director communications at NIS, wrote in the guestbook of Moran-Daleo’s online obituary. “There are countless stories of the ways she has carried us through difficult times in our lives, and we hope to now do anything we can to help carry her beautiful family through this unimaginable loss.”

Other tributes echoed the sentiment.

“Kristen was a mentor and friend to so many,” one guestbook message read. “She was strong, courageous, and fought so hard, for her family, and for all of us who loved her.”

Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m. at Branch Funeral Home of Miller Place, located at 551 Route 25A. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 15, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Louis de Montfort R.C. Church, located at 75 New York Ave. in Sound Beach.
