The Long Island Ducks were spreading the love this Valentine’s Day.
Each year, the Ducks visit local hospitals during the holidays to help lift the spirits of young patients.
On Wednesday, Ducks mascot Quackerjack joined with players and coaches and together they stopped Good Samaritan Hospital of West Islip and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital to give out autographs, high fives, and handmade cards.
Some of those cards came from Ducks shortstop Dan Lyons‘ girlfriend, who teaches at Building Blocks Pre-School.
“3-, 4-, 5-year-olds, wanted to make Valentine’s Day cards for the kids,” said Lyons. “They heard I was going to the hospital and they wanted to help put a smile on the kids’ faces.”
Good Sam’s chairwoman of pediatrics, Catherine Caronia, says the presence of the Ducks is important during the recovery process.
“It makes it special for the pediatric patients and their families that they are remembered,” she said. “It brings a little bit of cheer during the holidays as well.”
