L.I. ferry captain preps for second season on ‘Below Deck Mediterranean’

A South Shore native is going to be featured again on the upcoming fourth season of Below Deck Mediterranean.

Colin Macy-O’Toole of Sayville just wrapped up filming his second season on the hit Bravo TV show. It’s set to premiere sometime this summer.

“I went into this as a job opportunity,” Macy-O’Toole said. “I was a bit overwhelmed because I never worked on a yacht before… I was a ferry captain.”

The 31-year-old Sayville native began working for the Sayville Ferry Service in 2002 at 15 years old as a deckhand. At the time it was a simple summer job he held through college while he worked on getting his degree in music.

But working on the water always held a special place in his heart, so he decided to take the necessary steps to become a captain and then a port captain.

“I just kept moving up,” he said.

It wasn’t until more recently, when he was watching the fan favorite Bravo show, “Below Deck,” when he thought being on a show like that might be a fun opportunity. He did some research and found out that the spin-off, “Below Deck Mediterranean,” was accepting applications.

“I applied almost as a joke,” he laughed, “then I got a back and we went through the process.”

The show follows nine people working on high-end, multimillion-dollar yachts in the Mediterranean. Macy-O’Toole appeared on the third season of the show, set in Italy last year. “I was really thankful last season,” he said. “I got to learn new things from the rest of the crew… I went into this not knowing anything.”

Working on these yachts are completely different compared to the South Shore ferries that Long Islanders are used to. “Our biggest ferry boat is around 80/85 feet,” Macy-O’Toole said. “The yachts on the show are more than double that, some are around 170/180 feet.”

The fourth season of the show is set in the South of France and the fledgling realty show star is excited for fans to see what the crew has in store.

“It’s more than just docking the boat in Cherry Grove or Pines Harbor,” he said. “I’ve taken whatever I’ve learned [from the show] and am going to continue using those skills.”

Macy-O’Toole said that while the show is on air, he’ll get noticed while hanging out in Patchogue with his friends a— nd he’s gotten great feedback from fans.

“I’m known as the nice, funny guy on the show,” he laughed, “so definitely tune in this summer for another crazy season!”
