After a weekend snowfall blanketed Nassau and Suffolk counties, many residents have been enjoying the winter wonderland — and so has the local wildlife.
One species in particular seems to be thriving: the island’s red fox population.
Throughout the week, several wildlife photographers captured stunning images of these furry red mammals frolicking in the snow.
Fun fact: The red fox population on Long Island is growing and making a notable comeback in areas like Shelter Island and newer habitats such as the Norman J. Levy Preserve in Merrick. According to NTVLI.com, their resurgence has been supported by a lack of natural predators.
Note: To protect the foxes, Greater Long Island is not disclosing the exact locations where these photos were taken but will share the county where they were captured.
All of these photos were shared in the Facebook group Long Island Nature Photography.
