Local couple bringing ‘Published,’ a bookstore and bar to Huntington

|

Pints and paperbacks are soon be consumed under one roof in downtown Huntington.

A local family is just now putting the finishing touches on what Huntington Village’s newest bookstore — but with a cocktail bar as part of the plan.

An official opening date for what’s being called Published is coming soon.

It will help mark a new chapter for Finley’s of Greene Street, which closed in August after more than three decades in business.

Published will share the former Finley’s space with Mighty Fine eatery and pie bar, the all-day café that recently debuted a Huntington pop-up ahead of its permanent move into the subdivided site.

As for Published, Huntington residents Angela Jurow and her husband, Brett, got their keys to the space in November and have spent the past few months reimagining it as a cozy, family-friendly concept centered around books, pints and conversation.

For Jurow, the idea was born during a family trip to Kingston, N.Y., where they visited a bookstore-bar concept called Rough Draft Bar & Books.

“My kids are in love with reading,” she told Greater Long Island, noting that the family makes a point to visit local bookstores whenever they travel. “And we thought that Rough Draft was sweet and dreamy.”

Inspired, the couple began shaping a similar model for Huntington.

When the Finley’s space became available at 47 Green St., they saw an opportunity to bring that vision home.

Inside, the former bar has been transformed into what Jurow describes as a welcoming haven for book lovers of all ages. Published will carry new books across a wide range of genres, host author signings, book clubs and teen after-school events.

“This is a place for families,” Jurow said. “We want to foster creativity for both adults and kids.”

While shelves of books take center stage, the bar remains as an added feature. Published will serve beer, wine and cocktails, along with coffee, tea and espresso for those looking to browse with a drink in hand.

The kitchen portion of the property is being separated to house Mighty Fine’s permanent café, with plans for collaboration between the two businesses.

Jurow said Published will carry prepackaged goods from Mighty Fine on its side of the space.

“We want this to be a space where people can feel comfortable,” she said. “Parents can come meet up and kids can look through books.”
