Every week, children and teens go missing across Long Island, leaving families and communities on edge. Most are found safe or return home within a few days, but some remain missing for months or even years.
According to the New York State Missing Persons Clearinghouse, 24 active cases are publicly listed from communities across Suffolk and Nassau counties (there may be others that authorities have not posted or have not been submitted to the clearinghouse). The missing range from toddlers to teens, and a number of individuals have now aged into adulthood.
Some cases are recent, while others date back decades, including reports from the 1980s and 1990s.
The cases span a wide range of ages and communities. Some children are believed to be traveling with family members, while others may be in need of medical attention. Among the missing are people who have been unaccounted for as long as more than four decades.
The clearinghouse works with local law enforcement agencies to track the missing children cases, provide support to families and share information with the public. The list below reflects publicly available information from the clearinghouse, with permission from families or legal guardians to share their details.
