L.I. Craft Beer Week starts May 11, includes free beer for food donations

|

Long Island Craft Beer Week is fast approaching. That means a full schedule of events tailored for craft beer lovers of all stripes.

Always a huge part of the annual initiative involves the free Craft Cares beers that will become available across the island in exchange for non-perishables throughout the 10-day event.

Beer Week starts Friday, May 11, and runs to Sunday, May 20.

“This is always exciting, always fun,” said David Schultzer, the president of Long Island Craft Beer Week. “It’s 10 days of never being home, hanging out with the best people, and drinking awesome beers with my friends.”

As for the “Can for a Can” food drive, participating breweries and restaurants across the island collect food donations in exchange for a special beer that was collectively created earlier this month at the Fire Island Brewing Company in Bay Shore.

To get a can of this year’s brew, a Craft Cares Bi-Coastal IPA, you’ll need to donate three items of food.

The goal is to collect 5,000 pounds of nonperishables. Last year, the group raised over 3,500 pounds. The donations will be sent to the nonprofit Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank.

“It is a great partnership,” said Long Island Cares’ chief executive officer, Paule Pachter. “These are Long Island’s great entrepreneurs who are developing this wonderful beer, and in turn giving back to the community by supporting the local food banks.”
