Six grade schools on Long Island placed among New York’s top 20 public elementary schools, and 26 landed in the state’s top 100 in rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.
Specifically, Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District landed all four of its elementary schools in the top 100, including two in top 10. Rockville Centre and Herricks each have three schools in the state’s 100.
Schools from across Long Island — including 22 in Nassau County and 4 in Suffolk — are among the state’s very best, according to U.S. News’ 2024 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings. U.S. News evaluated 3,872 elementary schools in New York, based on data from the U.S. Department of Education.

The methodology focused on state assessments of students who were proficient or above proficient in mathematics and reading/language arts, while accounting for student backgrounds, achievement in core subjects, and how well schools are educating their students.
U.S. News did not release a national ranking, instead calculating rankings at the district and state levels.
“[The rankings] offer a way for parents to get a snapshot of their child’s school and how well it’s doing within its community,” said LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News. “Easily accessible data on student-teacher ratio, district spending, and the number of school counselors available at the school can keep parents informed and involved.”
