It wasn’t quicksand, but it sure acted like it.
Luckily this jogger had access to his phone today after he got stuck in chest-high mud in the former lake at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown.
The man, 24, of Medford, had sunk after trying to retrieve his dog from the muck, police said.
The 911 call drew a response from officers with the SCPD Emergency Service and Aviation sections.
Aviation officers located the man less than 30 minutes after the 12:10 p.m. call and hovered over the area until officers on the ground reached him, police said.
Sgt. Katherine Kuzminski and Ofc. Richard Esposito, both of the Fourth Precinct, entered the mud and attempted to pull out the man. After several minutes, Esposito successfully pulled him to shore and placed him in a police vehicle to warm him to
avoid hypothermia.
He was treated at the scene by members of the Nissequogue and Smithtown fire departments.
