A wave of support is pouring in from across Long Island following the tragic death of 12-year-old Nathan Ha, a Roslyn Middle School seventh grader who was struck and killed this week as he crossed the street in Flower Hill.
Police said Nathan was crossing Middle Neck Road, outside of a crosswalk near Northern Boulevard, about 6:38 p.m. when he was hit by a 2023 Ford pickup truck driven by an 18-year-old man. Nathan was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, and later died. The driver remained at the scene.
In the days since, 800-plus donors have contributed more than $72,000 to a GoFundMe campaign organized by Dominick Jung, a longtime friend of the Ha family. The money will help cover funeral expenses and ease the financial burden as the Ha family begins the difficult process of healing, Jung wrote on the GoFundMe page.
“Nathan was a bright, kind-hearted, and joyful young boy who touched everyone he met,” Jung wrote. “He was loved by his teachers and classmates, and his warmth and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on the Roslyn school community.”
Nathan was also a devoted son, a loving twin brother, and a protective older brother. Jung said he was an active and faithful member of his church, and that his death has touched hearts across Long Island and beyond.
“His absence leaves an unimaginable void for all who knew him,” Jung said.
Roslyn schools Superintendent Allison Brown informed the school district community on Tuesday about Nathan’s death.
“This is a devastating loss for the child’s family, friends, and for all of us in the Roslyn community,” she said in a letter. “Our hearts go out to the family during this most difficult time.”
Brown added that district personnel are providing any possible support to Nathan’s family and that school staff are available to support students, families, and colleagues who are struggling in the wake of the tragedy.
“In moments like these, it is more important than ever that we come together to support one another,” Brown said. “Please do not hesitate to reach out if you or your children need help or guidance in the days ahead.”
