Notre Dame lacrosse star Kasey Choma never forgets the foundation she built in her game while playing for Eastport-South Manor and competing in arguably the fiercest lacrosse region in the world.
“The consistent intensity and passion my teammates brought to practice every day made myself and everyone become a better player,” said Choma, who is being recognized as part of National Celebrate Lacrosse Week, Nov. 5-13. “Playing on Long Island against such talented players was truly special. The grittiness and level of competitiveness definitely prepared me for the physicality at the Division I level.”
After leading the Sharks to a high school state title in 2019, Choma — the No. 1 recruit in the nation — took her talents to South Bend, Indiana, and promptly led Notre Dame in scoring during the pandemic-shortened 2019 season, netting 22 goals in seven games. She again led the Irish in scoring during her sophomore (45 goals) and junior (59 goals) seasons.
Choma has been an All-American in each of her three seasons at Notre Dame. Among many other accolades, she earned All-ACC Academic Team honors in 2022.
Choma, who plays midfield, said she is particularly thankful for the experience she had playing for Eastport-South Manor coach Becky Thorn.
“Playing for ESM and for coach Thorn was such an incredible experience,” she said. “I created so many memories during my time with that program that will stay with me forever.
“I learned so much from Thorn throughout my six years (playing varsity) that still helps me today at the collegiate level,” she continued. “The confidence she instilled in me is something that has stuck with me throughout the years.”
Choma still enjoys playing with and against former Long Island high school players. Four of her current Notre Dame teammates played high school ball in Suffolk County and Long Islanders dot the rosters of the nation’s top lacrosse programs.
“It is so special that I know so many, and get to play against my previous high school competitors while wearing Notre Dame across my chest,” she said.
