Mary Adams becomes first female mayor of Babylon Village

|

Mary Adams is Babylon Village’s newest mayor, succeeding Ralph Scordino, who died earlier this week.

The 58-year-old realtor, who has been a Babylon Village trustee since 2016, was appointed on Friday via a special meeting held by trustees members on Zoom.

She becomes the first female to hold this position in the village’s history.

The oath of office was administered by Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

“As humbled and honor as I am for taking a leadership role as your mayor, it is bittersweet on a personal level,” said Adams, choking back tears on the live stream. “I lost a confidant, a teacher, a mentor, a friend, and my mayor.

“I can assure everyone that his legacy and vision for our village will continue.”

According to a report, on March 16 there will be a public vote to see who will finish the rest of Scordino’s term that is set to end in 2023.

Scordino died unexpectedly at his second home in upstate New York to what is believed to have been a heart attack. He was 71.

No funeral arrangements have been made public yet. Check back for more information.
