There is plenty to talk about when it comes to Massapequa football.
A three-time defending Long Island champion and a heavy favorite to complete the four-peat. A 23-game winning streak. And, a senior quarterback in Luke Garguilo, back for one last run after winning the award for best QB in Nassau County last season.
But ask anyone outside the Chiefs bubble what stands out about this season and the conversation turns to one thing: the Week 3 showdown with Garden City.
Just don’t mention it to the Chiefs staff and players themselves.
They’ll tell you they’re not ready to talk about it — yet.
“We will focus on that the second the clock hits zero in Week 2 against Syosset,” senior linebacker and offensive lineman Nolan Wieczorek told Greater Long Island. “Right now we are only focused on the opener against Port Washington and that’s all that matters.”
The Chiefs have two games to play before they can even begin thinking about their Sept. 26 showdown with Garden City at Hofstra. It’ll be the county’s first-ever crossover game featuring two top seeds in different conferences.
“Coach always preaches that we can’t think about that game until the Syosset game is over, so that’s our only mindset,” Garguilo said. “Once you come on the field you block everything else out.”
While they wait, everyone else is counting down the days until the the most anticipated regular season high school football game on the Island in years.
Garden City enters the season having won 66 games in a row, the longest winning streak in the nation.
Massapequa hasn’t lost a game since 2023.
“We don’t talk about it,” Massapequa head coach Kevin Shippos said. “I addressed it once at the beginning of the season. I said it’s still a ways away because we have two tough opponents first. We will turn our attention to Garden City 100% the week before.”
That’s because before the Chiefs can worry about Garden City, they have to begin another championship pursuit.
Massapequa is looking for back-to-back undefeated seasons for the first time in school history.
And they have the quarterback they want leading the way.
Garguilo returns after emerging as one of the most dynamic quarterbacks on Long Island as a junior last season. He can pass and he can run, and his big game experience gives Massapequa a big advantage over other Conference 1 teams.
“We know what we have to do,” Garguilo said. “We have the talent, a lot of people battling for spots, we just have to go out there and execute.”
And while that talent will be tested in the first two weeks, eventually it will be the test everyone has been waiting for.
Shippos knows what that Garden City game represents.
“As a high school coach in any sport, you want to put your athletes against the best,” he said. “The crossover games is a huge step. You want to see what you are made of, just as GC does against us. It’s a great life lesson, you want them to seek out the best and learn from it.”
