A popular dessert food truck is expanding, setting up a decorating studio in Mount Sinai.
Typically parked at 575 Route 25A in Mount Sinai and on site every Foodie Friday at Heritage Park, Mojo’s Cakes and Treats has been serving up different cakes, cookies, pastries and more for two years.
Owner Emma Van Middelem worked in bakeries and studied at Johnson and Whales University before she decided she wanted to turn her talents into a full-blown business.
Almost always at Foodie Fridays, she and her sister recently started parking the truck at its secondary spot (Thursdays through Sundays) in a parking lot owned by her father.
In fact, the property where you can find the truck when it’s not at the park — which has been in the family for three generations — houses two buildings; one that has remained vacant for several years and another rented out by a psychic.
Both buildings were built by Van Middelem’s grandfather in 1957 where the family lived and worked out of (originally a real estate office and a nursery next door).
“This was his house growing up,” she said. “Back then, 25A was only two lanes.”
Now, the empty storefront is being transformed into a place where people of all ages can learn the art of decorating with buttercream. To be called “Mojo’s Decorating Studio,” they plan to offer cookie and cake decorating classes and a space for parties. The food truck will be parked outside so patrons can grab a hand-crafted beverage or snack.
Van Middelem said they are planning other fun events for other makers like jewelry making and tea parties. She’s also excited for couple’s portrait night where people can paint their significant other on a cookie and the ability to have kids paint on a cookie during off-class hours.
“There’s not a lot of places where people can go with their kids,” said the mother of two, herself.
Classes are starting mid-July and people interested can sign up here.
“Everything we do is made from scratch and we have tons of variety because I can’t control myself,” she laughed.
