Montauk’s oceanfront property “The Stone House” — one of the most majestic estates on the East End — has hit the market for $18 million.
Perched on more than three acres, the estate offers nearly 180 feet of private ocean frontage and a rare combination of privacy and panoramic views.
The Stone House was a retreat for some of the 20th century’s most iconic figures. Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio reportedly stayed here, as did President John F. Kennedy and John Lennon. The estate is also frequently mentioned in Andy Warhol’s diaries.
A historic build
The century-old landmark at 408 Old Montauk Highway was constructed in 1912 and remains one of the most distinctive properties along Long Island’s Atlantic coastline. The 4,000-square-foot residence is built primarily of stone with copper windows and carved woodwork.
The property’s panoramic views extend east to the Montauk Lighthouse and south across the ocean.
Grounds and outbuildings
The parcel features a saltwater swimming pool designed in the shape of a pond, bordered by lawns and coastal plantings. A pool house with a bath and outdoor shower sits nearby, and a separate artist’s studio includes its own bath and covered porch.
Market position
The Stone House joins a small group of Montauk listings priced in the upper tier of the market. Current oceanfront offerings in the hamlet range between roughly $11 million and $20 million, with new construction often dominating the category. The Montauk property stands out for its age and craftsmanship, as well as the size of its lot.
A rare offering
While oceanfront estates are not uncommon in the Hamptons, few carry the history of a 1912 build that comes with this scale of acreage. The Stone House represents a blend of Montauk’s past and present — offering a reminder of the hamlet’s early 20th-century architecture while positioned amongst a 21st-century luxury market.

Inside the Stone House
The interior reflects the same craftsmanship seen on the exterior, with exposed beams, carved wood details and stone accents carried into the living spaces. Large windows frame the ocean and flood the rooms with natural light.
Meanwhile, the layout balances formal gathering areas with more intimate spaces. The home has been updated over the years, but it still retains the character of its early 20th-century design.
Elevated decks and grandiose views
Multiple decks extend from the house, creating outdoor spaces that capitalize on the property’s elevated perch above the shoreline. The views sweep uninterrupted across the Atlantic, with the Montauk Lighthouse visible to the east and, on clear days, Block Island further east.
