|

The Nassau County Highway Patrolman severely injured in an Oct. 6 funeral procession was released Thursday morning from Stony Brook University Hospital amid applause and cheers from his fellow officers.

Michael Hyland, 53, suffered horrific injuries when his department motorcycle collided with a Toyota Tundra at the intersection of North Wellwood Avenue and Jerome Street in Lindenhurst, Suffolk police said.

Hyland was initially brought to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with injuries across his entire body, then transferred to Stony Brook.

Officers from police departments across the tri-state area gathered outside the hospital to greet Hyland as he was wheeled out on a stretcher. He put his fist in the air just before being loaded into a Nassau police ambulance, sparking louder applause from the many officers wishing him well.

“Today, the Nassau County PBA was joined by @nassaucountypd and Police Departments from around the tri-state in support of Michael Hyland who was discharged from the Emergency Department after a month of fighting for his life. Please continue to keep Officer Hyland in your prayers as he continues his road to recovery.”

A GoFundMe page set up for Hyland and his family has raised about $144,000 from more than 1,300 donations.
