No duck left behind: That was the mission for Suffolk County Marine Bureau officers at Gilgo Beach Sunday night.
Armed with a crowbar and some quick thinking, the officers pried open the heavy storm drain grate and climbed down inside. One by one, they scooped up nine stranded baby ducklings.
Officers John Rodriguez and Robert Mroczkowski were patrolling the beach about 8:10 p.m. when some passersby flagged them down to tell them that a flock of ducklings had taken a wrong turn and fallen into a storm drain on nearby Broadway.
Their mother duck was waiting nearby the entire time. After the dramatic reunion, the little family waddled off together and swam safely into the Great South Bay.
