In the history of men’s basketball at St. Joseph’s College, just 13 players have scored 1,000 points or more.
Add North Babylon native Isaiah Moore to that short list.
Moore, a four-year starter with the Golden Eagles, reached 1,000th points this season last week — and at the most opportune time for his team. It was in a victory on Jan. 18 against SUNY Purchase, a Skyline Conference rival, to end his team’s nine-game losing streak.
“It was great; it was a relief,” said Moore, “I know I put the work in and it finally paid off.”
Moore has dedicated himself to basketball since he arrived in Patchogue, says Golden Eagles head coach Kevin Spann.
“Isaiah Moore is the most skilled basketball player I ever had the privilege to coach,” said Spann, who was hired by St. Joseph’s in 2014.
In Moore’s career as a mix between a guard and forward, he’s averaged 11 points per game, shooting 37.6 percent from three point range and 79.2 percent from the free throw line.
His versatility as a scorer helped him earn a starting spot early on in his freshman year. He played meaningful minutes all season long, especially in the 2014 championship game loss against Sage College.
In that game, Moore had an off night shooting, going a mere 2-15, but he limited the opposing team’s All-American, Kai Deans, to just seven points (he averaged 17.3 ppg that year).
“I put my arm around him and said, ‘The best part about this is that you have three years to right your wrongs’ and he’s been doing that ever since,” said Spann.
Now as a senior, the 6-foot-4 scorer is using his experiences to motivate his team down the stretch.
“My senior year has been my toughest because I have to be a leader to the younger guys, just trying to mold them into better players and people,” he said.
Moore, who plans to pursue a master’s degree in accounting after this year, says he has some unfinished business this season.
“My goals are to make it the playoffs; it would be one of the best stories in our history because of how we started this year,” he said. “But the number one goal is win the championship.”
