Northwell Health centers open on Fire Island through Labor Day

|

Northwell Health has announced its care centers in Ocean Beach and Cherry Grove will be open for walk-ins starting this Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

The Cherry Grove facility has been in operation since 2014, but the building was purchased by the health system earlier this year, officials said. Northwell opened its first immediate care facility in the village of Ocean Beach in 2013.

The centers are staffed from 9-11 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. and treat walk-in patients daily.

Pictured above is one of those patients, Anthony Russo, an Island Breeze chef who sought treatment at the Cherry Grove center after experiencing numbness in his leg and arm.

He was assessed by the doctors there and taken to Northwell Health’s Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

“When I got to Southside they told me I needed heart surgery,” said Russo. “Doctors at the hospital said that I had a mini stroke, but I didn’t have any permanent damage from that.

“I had the heart surgery and everything went well, and I’m back at work already.”

“When people are in the vacation mind-set, thinking about health care is usually not a priority,” said Edward Fraser, vice president of community relations, Northwell Health  “However, should a health care need, or an emergency situation occur on a barrier island, having access to quality health care is important.”

The Ocean Beach immediate care center is located at 504 Bayberry Walk and the Cherry Grove location is at 153 Doctor’s Walk.

They open for the first time this summer on Friday, May 26, at 4 p.m.
