Michael Dowling, who led New Hyde Park-based Northwell Health through decades of growth and transformation, will step down as president and CEO this October, the health system announced.
The dynamic leader helped expand Northwell from a regional network into the state’s largest private employer and health provider. The health system now operates 21 hospitals and over 900 outpatient facilities—including major medical centers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and New York City.
Dowling’s will be succeeded by John D’Angelo, who currently serves as Northwell’s executive vice president and chief executive for clinical strategy and integration.
“John D’Angelo is an exceptional leader who has played a pivotal role in our clinical transformation,” Dowling said in a statement. “I am confident he will continue to advance our mission and values.”
Dowling, a St. James resident and native of Limerick, Ireland, joined the system in 1995, then called North Shore-LIJ. He became CEO in 2002. Under his leadership, Northwell took on an increasingly prominent role across Long Island, inspiring the growth of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and positioning Northwell at the forefront of bioelectronic medicine.
A longtime advocate for public health, Dowling, 72, launched such efforts as the Center for Gun Violence Prevention and pushed the system to address social determinants of health, especially in underserved communities.
He will remain involved in leadership initiatives following his departure, the health system said,
“I am humbled and honored to be selected to succeed Michael Dowling. I am committed to build on his unparalleled legacy and vision that grew Northwell from a Long Island-based health system into a regional and national health care leader,” D’Angelo said.
“I look forward to leading our more than 100,000 team members who contribute to [our] critically important mission.”
