Nuns on the Bus set to make the rounds on Long Island, Oct. 2

|

While the wheels on the bus may go round and round, the Nuns on the Bus are turning conversations around with their mission of justice and hope.

NETWORK’s Nuns on the Bus & Friends — a Catholic advocacy group that tours the country, speaking with people about social justice issues — will make two stops on Long Island on Wednesday.

The wrapped coach bus, emblazoned with the message “We the people, we the voters,” will pull up first to the Sisters of St. Joseph property in Brentwood at 2:30 p.m., and then to Presbyterian Church of Baldwin at 6 p.m.

The visits will showcase New Hour, a nonprofit organization supporting incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and their families. Themed “Vote Our Future,” the tour encourages attendees to become multi-issue voters, promoting the “freedoms necessary for a future where all can thrive.”

The event in Brentwood will also celebrate the Sisters of St. Joseph’s ministries, including the Long Island Immigration Clinic and the Refugee Resettlement Program, both focused on social justice.

“I have been a Nun on the Bus since it started in 2012,” shared Sister Janet Kinney, director of the Long Island Immigration Clinic. “I ride the bus with my Sisters because I believe passionately that as faith-filled women of the Gospel, we must use our voices in the public forum and encourage our fellow Americans to use the power of their vote in this critical election year.

“For me, it is a graced opportunity and a privilege to be an ‘NOTB’ and journey with other justice seekers who desire to stand and work together to effect the common good for all,” she added.

All about the bus

The Long Island visits are among 25 stops on the eighth tour of Nuns on the Bus. This year’s tour is the group’s first physical tour in six years.

“The work being done here on our campus is work of great hope for our future,” said Sister Tesa Fitzgerald, president of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, who will speak at the event.
