The New York State Mentoring Program recently partnered with Kids Clubhouse of Suffolk County in Port Jefferson Station in an effort to create a program aimed at helping local middle school students.
But they need the public’s help.
The organizations are looking for volunteers ages 18 and up who would want to become a mentor to the local youth.
For an hour each week from October through May, the mentoring program’s mission is to promote the success of the youth within the community by establishing supportive mentor relationships.
This one-year program takes place in a school-based, one-to-one setting, where mentors are positive role models, guiding students with respect, structure, compassion and life skills — and it’s free, according to a spokesperson.
Originally established in 1974 by former New York State First Lady Matilda Raffa Cuomo, the program was re-launched in 2015 by her son, Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
