Olympians, pro runners will be heading to Bay Shore for the L.I. Mile

For the first time ever, Bay Shore High School will be playing host to the annual Hoka One One Long Island Mile.

The annual races attract runners from across the world to compete for awards and winnings.

For instance, the first place finisher in one pro race wins $3,000 (more details below).

The meet, which typically takes place at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, had to change locations because of track facility construction delays at the campus.

Now, the fourth annual race will be bringing professional and Olympic runners to the South Shore on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

“One of the first people we called when this issue came up was Coach (Steve) Borbet [of Bay Shore] and he was very willing to lend a hand,” said the meet’s co-director and professional miler, Kyle Merber. “Coach Borbet is excited for the community and school district to host [the race] so their kids can watch pro athletes do something special where they always practice.”

Another co-director, Brenden Barret of the Sayville Running Company, is excited the new venue comes closer to his running shop.

“We think that those who have seen the event previously will have enjoyed it enough to make the 20-minute drive to the South Shore,” Barret said.

Having a Long Island Rail Road stop close by is another benefit, he said.

The professional races kick off at 8:30 p.m., followed by community races at 7 p.m.

The admission cost for spectators is $5. It’s $20 to participate in the community races; there is also a fun run for kids for $10.

$500 to the winner of the non-elite heat (if they run sub-4 minutes)
1st Long Island Resident (Nassau or Suffolk County Resident): $100 each top male and female.
