Police recover body of one Hampton Bays resident; search continues for his friend

Authorities on Sunday recovered the body of one of two kayakers who went missing in Shinnecock Bay over the weekend, as the search for his companion resumed Monday morning.

Southampton Town Police said the body of 27-year-old Shane Garcia of Hampton Bays was found about 12:30 p.m. Sunday after marine patrol units from the New York State Police and Southampton Town Police discovered two kayaks and paddles washed ashore near Shinnecock East County Park.

Detectives, together with the department’s Community Response Unit and Drone Unit, joined the effort using drones and ATVs while a Suffolk County Police helicopter assisted overhead. State police divers eventually located and recovered Garcia’s body from the bay.

The search for the second kayaker, Aaron Montemarano, 25, continued until nightfall, police said.

Garcia was reported missing Saturday evening by his girlfriend after he failed to return home from a kayaking trip. His work van was later found parked at the end of Shinnecock Avenue in Hampton Bays.
