The iconic former home of Bowl Long Island at Patchogue — long known as “Patchogue 40 Lanes” — was torn down Wednesday, making way for a modern Tempo by Hilton hotel at 138 West Ave.
For many longtime residents, the demolition stirred up memories. A group of elderly men stood nearby, taking photos and exchanging bowling stories as the wrecking crew dismantled a building that held more than six decades of memories.
One older man was sobbing. He pointed the south end of the property and exclaimed, “That’s where the bathrooms were.”
The Patchogue alley closed permanently in late 2021 after pandemic‑era pressures and structural problems, including roof damage, made reopening unfeasible. The demolition clears the site for a planned mixed‑use development: a five‑story Tempo by Hilton hotel featuring about 96 rooms, 13 residential apartments, and a rooftop restaurant.
It will be the first modern hotel in the village.
