He promised drugs. He promised money. Sometimes, just a shower.
Then Gary Conyers pulled out a knife.
A Suffolk County jury convicted the 59-year-old Patchogue man of predatory sexual assault after finding he used a knife — and the desperation of six women addicted to crack-cocaine — to lure them into his home and force them to perform oral sex on him. He will be sentenced to up to 25 years on April 21.
Prosecutors said in at least two cases, Conyers used the blade to cut his victims, one in the face and the other slashed on her neck. He also strangled a victim with her scarf until she went limp, according to evidence introduced during his trial in front of Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei.
Conyers was found guilty Thursday on 25 counts, including eight counts of predatory sexual assault, seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual act, seven counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of second-degree assault, and one count of strangulation, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced.
Prosecutors said Conyers targeted women living in poverty, drawing them into his car or home before using or threatening a knife to force compliance.
The crimes occurred between October and December 2023. Conyers was arrested in May 2024, following a joint investigation by the Tierney’s Office, the Suffolk Police Department and the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office.
“This defendant carried out a calculated campaign of sexual abuse, preying on six vulnerable women and forcing them into degrading acts by threatening violence,” Tierney said. “His actions were predatory, deliberate, and devoid of any regard for human dignity.”
