Pet Supplies Plus finds its footing in Port Jefferson Station

|

A new pet supply store that opened earlier this summer in Port Jefferson Station is beginning to settle in — and now turning its attention toward local outreach and community partnerships.

Pet Supplies Plus, part of a national franchise, opened at 4860 Nesconset Highway and is owned and operated by local entrepreneur Abbas Dastgir. The store offers food and supplies for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, fish and other small animals, along with grooming services and self-service pet wash stations.

Dastgir told Greater Long Island the opportunity to combine retail with community involvement is what attracted hm to the business. He plans to partner with nearby animal shelters and rescue groups to host year-round adoption events, food drives and fundraisers.

“Pets are part of the family,” he said. “We want to be a trusted place in the neighborhood where people know they can get help and find what they need.”

Founded in 1988, Pet Supplies Plus counts more than 730 locations in 44 states, including several on Long Island. While the company operates nationally, most stores are locally owned and designed to be tailored to the needs of their individual communities.

The Port Jefferson Station store encourages customers — or “neighbors,” as the chain calls them — to bring in their leashed pets. Team members are trained to assist with product questions, including guidance on natural and holistic foods, and provide carry-out service for heavier items.

Pet Supplies Plus also offers curbside pickup and free same-day delivery for online orders placed on its website. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
