Photos: winter of 2026 blizzard buries Long Island in snow

|

The Winter of 2026 — as widely and amply predicted — is roaring across Long Island Sunday, dumping heavy snow and creating blizzard-like conditions that have upended life across Nassau and Suffolk.

A powerful winter storm hammered Long Island throughout the day, with snow falling at rates of one to two inches per hour and wind gusts up to 35 mph. The National Weather Service forecasted that much of the area could see accumulations of eight to 12 inches of snow, with higher totals possible in persistent bands before the storm tapers off on Monday.

County and law enforcement officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, noting that road conditions were rapidly deteriorating as plows struggled to keep pace with the snowfall.

The storm brought widespread disruption across Long Island, including suspended bus service, modified Long Island Rail Road schedules and mounting concerns about refreezing once the snow stops. Forecasters said snow could mix with sleet or freezing rain late Sunday before tapering off. Sub-freezing temperatures eare expected to then linger for several days.
