Once abuzz with shoppers, and long-known for one of the last remaining Orange Julius locations on Long Island, the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa is now what’s called a ghost mall.
One of the original anchor tenants when the mall opened in 1973, Macy’s has now closed.
All that’s left is a Dick’s Sporting Goods in a Walmart space.
In the run-up to the mall’s wipeout, patrons weren’t allowed inside, only being able to access stores that were facing the parking lots.
Newsday reported earlier this year that the property’s owners, Sunrise Mall Holdings LLC, which purchased the property in 2020, stopped extending leases in 2022. “Sunrise Mall Holdings is working through several different plans for redevelopment,” a managing member of the ownership group told the paper in January.
“The partnership group did not provide details but hopes to make an announcement this year.”
In the meantime, Greater Long Island swung by for some ghost mall photos. Interior shots were taken through glass.
