While strolling along the beach at Smith Point County Park, a man and a woman made a grim discovery.
At approximately 4:55 p.m., the pair found what appeared to be a human jawbone, according to Suffolk police.
They reported their discovery to a beach attendant, who promptly alerted authorities. The remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s office, where they were confirmed to be human.
Police are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
This is not the first instance of human remains being found at the Shirley beach. In March 2023, a human bone was discovered in the sand. While it is unclear if that earlier discovery is connected to this latest finding, Suffolk County Police are actively investigating, a department spokesperson confirmed to Greater Long Island.
