Police search for WW1-era machine gun stolen in Bay Shore

Suffolk police are seeking the public’s helping in locating an inoperable WWI-era gun recently stolen from the Bay Shore Marine Corps League Detachment.

The fireman, a MG 08 machine gun, was swiped from the roof at 2055 Sunrise Highway sometime this month, police say. It’s valued at approximately $20,000. See the photo below.

The MG 08, or Maschinengewehr 08, was a weapon developed in 1908 by the Germans; it was in service for both World Wars. Click here to read more history on the model.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.

Anyone with such information should contact Suffolk County Crime Stoppers to submit an anonymous tip by calling 1-800-220-TIPS, texting “SCPD” and your message to “CRIMES” (274637) or by email at www.tipsubmit.com.
