Definitely call it a comeback.
Peter Pan Diner in Bay Shore will rise from the ashes, its owners assured the community this week, while sharing the news that an insurance settlement on the fire that destroyed the longtime community staple has been finalized.
“(The) contractor and designer have been hired and we have now begun the process of rebuilding a brand new diner,” ownership posted on Facebook on Wednesday.
“I would also like to acknowledge with much heart felt gratitude and appreciation to the men and women of the Bay Shore Fire Dept, Bay Shore – Brightwaters Ambulance, and Third precinct Suffolk County Police Dept.,” the post continues. “Not just for amazingly quick response and securing the area and saving the diner from total devastation but for all (the) years of risking your lives on a daily basis to protect us and our community.”
Standing amid scattered puddles and piles of broken glass in what remained of the diner hours after the devastating July 1 kitchen fire, co-onwer Pete Lentzeres promised Peter Pan Diner would be back in business.
Located off Sunrise Highway, the diner has operated in Bay Shore since 1955. Pete Lentzeres co-owns the diner with his brother Nick.
“My family and I are so proud and happy to be part of this wonderful community for .. four generations,” ownership wrote in their post in the Bay Shore Moms & Dads Facebook group, “and looking forward to celebrating our 70th anniversary in this upcoming coming year with all the wonderful friends, acquaintances and our terrific customers we have made through the years.”
