Fraudsters are impersonating Riverhead town officials in a new email phishing scheme, the town warned resident on Thursday.
The Town of Riverhead said there’s been a wave of fraudulent emails impersonating the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) and Planning Board.
The fake messages seek payment for permit or application fees. Recipients are told to pay through unofficial channels.
One example scam address making the rounds looks convincingly official at first glance: [email protected]. But it’s anything but.
A legitimate Riverhead Town email address always ends in @townofriverheadny.gov.
Town officials said Riverhead will never request payments, invoices or permit fees through unsolicited emails or outside links.
How to spot the scam
- An unexpected invoice or payment request is a huge red flag.
- Ignore or report any “Riverhead Town” email from any address not ending in @townofriverheadny.gov.
- Pressure to pay immediately is a clear sign of fraud.
