The inlet span of the Robert Moses Causeway bridge has been deemed safe and is fully reopened to traffic following a state inspection completed Wednesday morning, the New York State Department of Transportation confirmed.
The southbound span temporarily closed Sunday night into midday Monday after reports of debris falling from the structure onto the sand below prompted an emergency response.
DOT inspectors that day began a detailed review of the bridge, which connects the mainland to Robert Moses State Park across the Fire Island Inlet.
Traffic continued in both directions during the inspection, but the initial closures led to delays for beachgoers and commuters. The DOT then closed one lane again late Tuesday into Wednesday morning for final inspections.
The Inlet Span is the southernmost section of the Robert Moses Causeway, a key stretch of roadway for visitors heading to the state park and nearby beaches.
