Sayville Athletic Club to host Oct. 23 fundraiser for injured EMS and fire volunteer

|

The Sayville Athletic Club is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 23, for a volunteer firefighter and EMT who was seriously injured during an emergency call last month.

Steve Redding, a 35-year veteran of the West Sayville Fire Department and a 15-year member of the Community Ambulance Company, was hospitalized after getting hurt while responding to a 911 EMS call on Sept. 18. Members of the fire department and the ambulance company are running the fundraiser.

The community event will run from 2-5 p.m. at the Sayville Athletic Club, located at 209 Railroad Ave. in Sayville. A $50 donation includes barbecue food, an open bar, live music and raffles. Money raised will go toward Redding’s mounting medical expenses.

Friends have also established a GoFundMe page for Redding. So far, donations have exceeded $11,000.

“He has dedicated his entire life to responding to our neighbors calls for help. It is our turn to help Steve in his time of need,” Jamie Atkinson, a longtime Community Ambulance and a retired MTA detective, said in a Facebook post about the event. “Please consider donating to an amazing person and family.”
