Patchogue boater rescued from sinking vessel in Sayville, then charged with drunk boating

Marine Bureau officers pulled the man from the sinking vessel off Sayville before determining he was drunk

Marine police rescued a Patchogue man from his sinking boat in the Great South Bay in Sayville Tuesday night, then arrested for boating while intoxicated.

Christopher Carlson, 48, was riding a 2004 30-foot Grady-White about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday when the boat hit an object in the water, police said. Carlson then placed a 911 distress call to report the boat was sinking.

Suffolk Police Marine Bureau officers responded and saved Carlson, who was traveling alone, from the vessel.

After determining he had been drinking, police charged Carlson with operating a vessel while intoxicated. He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip.
