Sayville firefighters free trapped occupant after box truck slams into pole on Sunrise Highway

Two patients hospitalized following heavy extrication effort on the westbound express lane

A commercial box truck crash on Sunrise Highway left one occupant trapped and heavily pinned inside the cab Sunday morning, triggering a lengthy rescue operation by Sayville firefighters.

The Sayville Fire Department responding to the wreck arrived to find the box truck had struck a pole in the center median.

Firefighters deployed hydraulic rescue tools to cut the victim free from the heavily damaged cab. Suffolk Police assisted at the scene.

Two patients were taken to area hospitals by Sayville’s Community Ambulance Company.
