Mark March 13 on your calendars.
That’s when Sayville football begins to defend its 2019 Division III high school county championship and finally opens the 2020-21 school year season — at home against Kings Park.
The Golden Flashes’ mini, five-game season concludes four weeks later on April 10, with the team’s only other home contest, versus Westhampton. Neither home game will be played night under the lights.
High school football was postponed in the fall in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. But it’s back in play this school year, after state and Suffolk County officials announced this month that sports classified by the state as “high risk” can begin practice and competition on Feb. 1.
Traditional winter sports, such as wrestling and girls and boys basketball, are set to begin their seasons next month, playing until March. Traditional spring sports, including lacrosse, baseball and softball, will play from April 18 until the third week of June.
Sandwiched in-between is a “fall” season that includes football, soccer and volleyball. It will run March 1 until the fourth week of April.
