Sayville serves up new turf courts for its middle school tennis teams

|

The Sayville School District has installed new artificial turf tennis courts at its middle school and they’re ready to roll.

Players and coaches from the girls middle school team, together with district officials, celebrated the new courts appropriately with a gold-and-purple ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday.

“The Sayville School District is the first-ever school (district) in Suffolk County to install state-of-the-art artificial turf tennis courts at the middle school,” Sayville Athletic Director Ryan Cox said during the ceremony, held before the team’s first game of the season against a team from William Floyd.

A very limited amount of Long Island school districts have turf tennis courts, said Dr. Sam Gergis, Assistant Superintendent for Business. But it’s a different case in Nassau County.

“Installation of the turf tennis courts,” Dr. Cox explained, “is gaining steam as several Nassau County school districts have installed them over the last five to seven years. The turf provides a surface conducive to the development of skills for our middle school tennis athletes, as well as provides a more effective approach to maintaining the courts.”
