Sayville’s Logan O’Hoppe promoted to the Majors; gets first hit for Los Angeles

|

Huge Long Island news out of Los Angeles: Sayville native Logan O’Hoppe recorded his first Major League Baseball hit Wednesday for the Los Angeles Angels.

The 2018 St. John the Baptist graduate was been promoted to the big leagues this week, in time to start behind the plate at catcher for the Angels against Oakland Athletics. He went 1-3 in the Los Angeles’ 4-1 win at home.

O’Hoppe, traded by Philadelphia to the Angels for centerfielder Brandon Marsh in early August, is back in uniform tonight as the Angels again host Oakland, with mega-star Shohei Ohtani pitching for Los Angeles.

The trade was surprising at the time, considering O’Hoppe had established himself as one of the top 100 prospects in baseball and at a premium position, catcher. After the move was completed, he was immediately regarded as the top prospect in the Angels’ farm system.

Since that time, O’Hoppe – who had previously been considered a defense-first catcher – started tearing the cover off the ball. In 29 games since the trade, he crushed 11 home runs and drove in 33 runs with 29 walks against 22 strikeouts. A ridiculous slash line of .306/.473/.673 is Barry Bonds-esque, and it’s from a potential Gold Glove winning catcher.

While several Long Island hurlers have starred recently in the Major Leagues, i.e. Pat-Med’s Marcus Stroman and Steven Matz of Stony Brook, O’Hoppe becomes the first position player from Long Island to reach the Major Leagues since Reid Gorecki in 2009 with the Braves.

O’Hoppe helped lead St. John the Baptist to the CHSAA Championship in 2018 with an historic season and he was named Axcess Man of the Year.
