Severe weather alert: Thunderstorms and heavy winds in Greater Sayville this afternoon and Wednesday

Islip Town officials have issued an alert regarding severe thunderstorms and strong winds that are expected to blow through Greater Sayville and the rest of the town this afternoon and tomorrow.

The alert warned of possible hail and wind gusts of up to 50 mph for this afternoon, tonight and into Wednesday.

“Sustained winds of 15 – 35 mph are expected, with potential gusts of up to 50 mph. A wind advisory has been issued,” the town said in a statement.

The storm is expected to begin impacting the Greater Sayville area between 1-5 p.m.

All of the town’s storm-related equipment, including tanker trucks, pumps and chainsaws are positioned for dispatch, town officials said.
