Hundreds donate to help 27-year-old Shirley mom battling brain cancer

|

Just a week ago, Caitlyn Weldon was a healthy 27-year-old mom chasing after her 5-year-old son. Today, she’s facing a diagnosis that has upended her life and galvanized her community.

After several days of feeling ill, the Shirley woman made multiple trips to urgent care searching for answers. But none came.

Finally, she went to the hospital, where scans revealed a mass on her brain. Doctors told her she had glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

“In just days, everything has changed for her,” her friend Taylor Strong wrote on a GoFundMe page. “She was healthy just a week ago, and now she is looking at months of treatment and a long road to recovery.”

Wave of contributions

The diagnosis has devastated Weldon’s family and friends. But it has also sparked an extraordinary wave of support.

Within 24 hours of the fundraiser launching, more than 300 people donated, raising over $24,000 to help Weldon cover medical and living expenses as she begins her cancer fight.

Strong described Weldon, a William Floyd alumna who played field hockey in high school, as “an amazing mom, sister, daughter and friend — someone who would do anything to help anyone and everyone she knows.”

Now, the community appears determined to return that generosity.

“This is our turn to help the most deserving, kind-hearted, and beautiful person we all know and love,” Strong wrote.
